Chapter Eighteen

Faye

I didn’t remember falling asleep, but suddenly my sore eyes opened to soft sunlight drifting in through my bedroom window.

The taste of Dawson still tingled on my lips.

My heart fluttered as I touched my mouth. I’d been kissed before, but not like that. It never felt like a man had literally stolen my breaths and left me dizzy in the best way. Last night, after our mind-blowing kiss, Dawson had put away the album, and he’d spent the rest of the night up in his studio while I watched movies with Meatloaf. I’d spent most the night wide awake, highly aware that Dawson was in this very house only steps away. My skin flush at the thought of the way his hands had tangled in my hair.

It might have been an impulsive decision, letting Dawson kiss me, but I couldn’t bring myself to regret it. The tension building between the two of us these last weeks was becoming too much. Maybe it was good for us to get it out of our system.

I listened closely for any sounds of movement in the house, any sign that Dawson was awake. I hadn’t seen him last night before I got in bed, and I worried about him. I’d never seen him react like he had to the photo album of his family. The lost, agonized look on his face would be seared into my memory for a long time.

Everything in the cabin seemed quiet, it was almost deafening. I rolled over, untangling myself from my crisp, white sheets and grabbed my phone from the nightstand to check the time.

It was late morning, closer to afternoon. Dawson had to be awake. He was an early riser.

I quickly got dressed and ran a brush through my hair. It still was soft from the salon and smoothed out quicker than it normally would. I didn’t even have to run the straightener through it.

After putting on a cardigan to stave off the winter chill that had seeped through the bones of the cabin, I left my bedroom and padded downstairs with Meatloaf close behind me. He must have had to use the restroom badly. I’d slept in much later than normal.

Dawson wasn’t on the main floor at first glance. Unease squirmed in the pit of my stomach. The kitchen was clean and tidy, no pan sitting in the sink as a tell-tale sign he’d made himself his usual breakfast of eggs and bacon. There was no smell of coffee in the air.

I turned toward the living room, heading to the back of the cabin to let out Meatloaf, when I froze.

My mouth dropped open at the scene set outside the windows looking out on the back yard.

Everything was covered in fluffy, pure snow. I blinked a few times, the bright white making my eyes sting. There weren’t more than a few inches, but I had never seen so much snow in my entire life. It didn’t seem real. It blanketed everything. Barren tree branches were covered in white.
